Normativity in Language, Ethics & Cognition
Description:
Normativity is a pervasive phenomenon among humans and a crucial characteristic of the way we interact. Nevertheless, normativity has been a difficult nut to crack for science and philosophy alike, since no straightforward definition of the concept is available. Is normativity related to motivation or legitimation? Should it be investigated empirically or with a priori tools? What, if anything, has normativity in areas as varied as language, cognition, law, ethics, politics, and even aesthetics, got in common? What are the sources of normativity? This workshop, which is a joint initiative between philosophers from Unisinos and the University of Califórnia at Davis, will deal with some of these questions. We will look at the problem from a variety of different philosophical perspectives, ranging from philosophy of language to epistemology and ethics.
