The Social and Political Philosophy book asks “how should we live together?” and how we should organize our societies and governments. It explores the ways in which social and political philosophies have influenced forms of political institutions, our ways of life, and current socio-political debates. It will address the principles that establish and justify societies and governments, including the fundamental yet controversial principles of authority, justice, rights, equality, liberty, and democracy. It will look at how philosophers have conceived of the rights and responsibilities of a society to its members, of the members to society and to each other, and of a society to other societies, with a keen eye on contemporary issues and movements.

The book aims to do justice to the philosophical tradition while being alert to the key contemporary movements. It includes the following chapters and authors so far:

  • What is Social and Political Philosophy?, by Valery Vino

  • The State of Nature and the Modern State, by Jordan Liz (San Jose State University)

  • Human Rights, Liberty, and Social Justice, by Lamont Rodgers (Houston Community College)

  • Theories of Authoritarianism, by Geoff Boucher (Deakin University)

  • 20th Century Theories, by Nathan Eckstrand (Klein Oak High School)

  • Decolonisation, by Carlos Rivera Santana (William & Mary)

  • Prefigurative Politics by Ruth Sonderegger (Academy of Fine Arts Vienna)

We are currently seeking authors for six other chapters in this book:

  • Government and Society

  • Capitalism, Marxism, Anarchism

  • The Ideal Society

  • Feminist Movements

  • Critical Race Theory

  • Social and Political Activism

Word limit: around 6.000, each chapter will be peer-reviewed, and we are looking for people with a PhD in philosophy, ideally with teaching experience at the first-year level.

If you’re interested in writing a chapter for us, please send an email with a statement of interest and a copy of your CV to the Social and Political Philosophy book editor, Dr. Valery Vino: [email protected].

If you have questions about the broader project or the books, you can contact the series editor for the book series, Prof. Christina Hendricks: [email protected]
