Various scholars have argued that philosophy plays a key role in the
contemporary world. Besides, different aspects of philosophy are
involved in establishing order in some societal layers of theocratic
societies like Iran, in which religion is intertwined with
philosophy. Furthermore, philosophy is regarded as a tool to
understand the ties between religions and civilizations. In fact, in
order to formulate probable dialogues between religious factors and
cultural ones, one is in need of utilizing philosophy.

At the same time, philosophers, both classic and modern, seem to have
tried to achieve a life-like concept of philosophy. Socrates’ views
of self-knowledge and the bonds it has to an ethical society can be
taken as an example. Wittgenstein, on the other hand, suggested a
therapy-based approach towards philosophy to avoid the probable
linguistic misconceptions. These arguments and the many in between
can be taken as examples of trying to combine philosophy and events
in everyday life.

To this goal, Al-Mustafa International University of Mashhad (MIU)
and Council for Research in Values and Philosophy (RVP) are pleased
to announce the first international conference on “Philosophy as a
Way of Life in the Contemporary World” to be held in Mashhad, Iran,
June 2014.

The main themes of the conference are:

1. Relation between Reason (Philosophy) and Faith (Religion) in the
Islamic world and the Christian world
2. Philosophy as a way of life in the Islamic civilization
3. The social and political roles of philosophy in Contemporary Iran
4. Philosophy as a tool to improve beliefs
5. Philosophy as a medium for dialogues between religions and
cultures
