with Prof. Duncan Pritchard and Dr. Allan Hazlett

University of Edinburgh, 11th-12th June 2014

Call for Applicants

We are glad to announce that the University of Edinburgh will host the BPPA (The British Postgraduate Philosophy Association) masterclass, Epistemic Values and Intellectual Virtues. The masterclass is led by two internationally renowned philosophers on this topic, Prof. Duncan Pritchard and Dr. Allan Hazlett. We warmly invite you to join us.

The BPPA masterclass provides an ideal environment where you can receive valuable feedbacks on your research from internationally renowned philosophers and exchange ideas with people working in the same area. Prof. Pritchard and Dr. Hazlett will lead seminars on the materials designed for the masterclass. Participants have opportunity to present their works. All participants are expected to actively engage in the masterclass.

For the topic of epistemic value and intellectual virtue, you may consult the entries, “The Value of Knowledge” and “Virtue Epistemology”, in the Stanford Encyclopaedia of Philosophy, or the books Epistemic Value (edited by Adrian Haddock, Alan Millar, and Duncan Pritchard, OUP) and A Luxury of the Understanding: On the Value of True Belief (Allan Hazlett, OUP)

To apply to participate in the masterclass, please send a cover letter of up to 500 words, listing your academic positions and contact information, describing your academic interests and research, and explaining your motivation for applying to take part in this masterclass. Any research you’ve done related to epistemic values and intellectual virtues is welcome to be included.

You are encouraged to present your research. Please also submit a 500-word abstract of your presentation.

The deadline of application is 15th April. The application should be in doc, docx or pdf format to [email protected]. If you have any questions, feel free to submit them to the same email address. Each applicant will be notified whether his or her application was successful on or before 30th April.

We will make our best effort to secure any funding to cover the expenses of participants, such as dinners and accommodation. However, participants are encouraged to apply for a bursary from their home institution.

This masterclass is generously sponsored by the Scots Philosophical Association, the Mind Association, and the Analysis Trust
