CFP: Puncta: Journal of Critical Phenomenology, Call for Editorial Assistant
Submission deadline: September 12, 2025
Details
Puncta: Journal of Critical Phenomenology
Editorial Assistant Position
About Puncta
Puncta is an open-access, peer-reviewed philosophical journal established with the specific intention of redirecting phenomenological intentionality. It is our belief that phenomenology is not a mere descriptive practice, but an enactment of critique, that is, an ongoing process of revealing and interrogating the concrete conditions, institutions, and assumptions that structure lived experience, phenomenological inquiry, and thinking. We publish articles that engage the critical turn of phenomenology via analyses of socio-political phenomena, reflections on the limits and challenges of phenomenological inquiry, or by attending to the history of philosophy, either through its silences or its canonical figures.
Critical phenomenology takes up the works of thinkers such as Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Simone de Beauvoir, Frantz Fanon, Hannah Arendt, and, more recently, Lisa Guenther, Sarah Ahmed, Alia Al-Saji, and Mariana Ortega, committing itself to broaden this field of inquiry. We invite scholars who publish with us to draw both on classical and contemporary phenomenology in order to join our efforts of broadening the scope and import of phenomenological research.
About the Position
The journal is inviting applications for the position of Editorial Assistant. The Editorial Assistant plays a key role in helping Puncta editors accomplish our mission. Once trained, the EA will assist in various steps of the production process, including fact-checking, copyediting, typesetting, and proofing articles prior to publication. The EA will also assist the editors with journal publicity, including managing social media accounts, and conduct outreach to authors for invited and solicited submissions. The EA will be supervised by the Puncta editorial team, who will provide feedback through regular supervisory meetings. The Assistantship is 10 hours/week. At this time, the position is not compensated.
This position will appeal most to a student who is detail-oriented, comfortable working with deadlines, enjoys working with social media, and has an interest in learning more about academic publishing.
Professional Development
Editorial assistants will be trained in core editorial competencies, including copyediting, fact-checking, typesetting in Adobe InDesign, and proofreading. While applicants with prior editorial experience are preferred, training sessions will be provided to all assistants at Puncta. Should assistants go on to seek compensated editorial work, Puncta editors will be glad to serve as professional references.
