Those Who Have the Gold Make the Evidence?

The ‘godfather’ of bioethics speaks on the problem of problematic relationship between the Pharmaceutical Industry and Clinical Trials Thursday April 10 as part of national series exploring birth, life and death of evidence.

What?

“Pharmaceutical companies fund the bulk of clinical research and this funding can introduce biases into the research” says Dr. Joel Lexchin, but attempts to eliminate these biases aren’t working. “What is needed is a paradigm change in the relationship between pharmaceutical companies and the conduct and reporting of clinical trials.”

The event, which expected to draw a wide audience, is part 5 of The Lives of Evidence national lecture series that examines the cultural, ethical, political, and scientific role of evidence in our world. “Many questions are raised in light of the recent concerns about transparency, conflicts between experts, political interference in the scientific process, and dire warnings about the ‘death of evidence,’” says Dr. Gordon McOuat, Director of the national Situating Science project. “These make it all the more crucial that we examine the origins, meaning and trust in our concepts of ‘evidence’.”

The free event,Those Who Have the Gold Make the Evidence: The Pharmaceutical Industry and Clinical Trials, is supported by the national Situating Science project and the Rotman Institute of Philosophy at Western University.
