Winter Workshop on Plato’s Republic Book 3, January 3-7, 2026

The best way to understand the genius of Plato’s most famous work is to study it in the Greek. For 2026, we focus on Republic Book III, in which Socrates continues his criticism of poetry and explores heroic role models and athletic training in the education of the guardians. Participants will read and translate the text in a roundtable setting while discussing its philosophical content; they may also present papers on relevant topics. Competence reading Ancient Greek is recommended but not required; the instructor will translate and explain as needed. The workshop takes place in scenic Ortigia, where the winter weather is mild and the island is active but peaceful.

Deadlines: October 15 (early abstracts & financial aid); December 15 (final abstracts & registration)

Faculty: George Gazis, University of Durham; Heather L. Reid, Exedra Mediterranean Center

Fees: 499 euro before Nov. 15; 549 euro after.

Discounts for returning students and limited financial aid can be applied for when registering.
