‘Climate Philosophy After 1.5 Degrees C’

A range of practical and theoretical questions emerge once we begin to take seriously the possibility of far exceeding agreed-upon temperature targets. Some of these questions concern the policy idea of ‘overshoot.’ Should we, globally, aim to at some point return temperatures to below 1.5 degrees using carbon removal, even given the extensive land and energy use requirements of that technology? Or should we artificially use solar geoengineering to ‘meet’ Paris Climate targets. Is the notion of ‘overshoot’ a useful one to begin with? In the background of all these questions, it’s also worth it to keep asking: When, if at all, should we avoid surrendering to the inevitability of a world of 2, or 2.5, or 3 degrees C of warming? After all, arguably many who claim that such a world is inevitable assume the continuation of current political and economic arrangements, such as ongoing consumption and population growth and private investment driving (or constraining) the energy transition.

These questions (and more) help to characterize one of the International Society for Environmental Ethics (ISEE) sessions at this year's Pacific APA. The 'Climate Philosophy after 1.5 Degrees C' session will also be included in the Philosophers for Sustainability Climate Hub.

ISEE will (as always) be applying for TWO Pacific APA sessions. The other session will be open (unthemed).

You do not need to be a member of ISEE to submit a proposal; however, if accepted we ask that all presenters have a current annual membership in the society ($50 regular / $35 student). Membership dues help fund activities of the Society including the Summer Meeting. Financial assistance with membership is available on a case-by-case basis. Submission Procedure

For individual paper submissions, please submit an anonymized version of either: (1) a 500-word abstract, or (2) a full paper (approx. 3000 words). Before submitting, please confirm you will be able to attend the APA if your presentation is accepted. The meeting will be VIRTUAL from April 9-12, 2026. If you are not able to attend, please do not submit. In your email, please also specify if your submission should be considered for the themed panel ‘Climate Philosophy After 1.5 Degrees C.’

Materials should be submitted via email ( Microsoft Word or PDF format) to Simona Capisani  ([email protected]) by September 29, 2025. Please make the subject of your email: ISEE Pacific APA 2025 Submission
