Call For Papers: Special Section on Arendt and the Question of War in the Modern World
(Volume 10 of Arendt Studies)
The frame for this special section springs from a section in The Promise of Politics titled “The Question of War. In this far-ranging effort to understand the phenomenon of war in the modern world (1945 to the present), one finds Arendt looking for guidance everywhere from Hiroshima to the ancient Greeks and Romans, from the waste economy to the exploitation of nature, from the question of law to violence as the end of politics. We invite papers on any aspect of Arendt’s account of war, violence, or force — including their relevance for understanding contemporary events such as the wars in Ukraine and Palestine. We also welcome reflections on historical episodes that help to illuminate the question of war in the modern world, from the Iraq War and modern revolutions to violence in the ancient world. In addition, we are open to contributions exploring violence more broadly construed, as well as papers on non-violence and anti-war movements.
The suggested length for essays is approximately 5000-6000 words, and we ask that you submit your article by April 1, 2026.
