Research in the social sciences suggests that boys and men are increasingly struggling across multiple measures of social success. They are falling behind in education, facing higher rates of suicide and addiction, withdrawing from the workforce, and encountering a decline in close friendships. At the same time, they confront new challenges in navigating shifting cultural expectations of masculinity.

  • Why is this happening?
  • What political, social, and economic consequences could follow if these trends continue?
  • And what, if anything, should change in our institutions, gender norms, and social practices?

Join us for an evening of discussion between two leading thinkers in this field.

Richard V. Reeves is a social scientist and Nonresident Senior Fellow at Brookings, whose recent book is Of Boys and Men Why the Modern Male Is Struggling, Why It Matters, and What to Do about It (2022).

Robin Dembroff is Associate Professor of Philosophy at Yale University and author of the forthcoming book Real Men on Top: How Patriarchy Shapes our Reality (2026).
