From Shareholder Capitalism to Economic Democracy
Since neoliberalism took hold in the 1970s, the power of shareholders has increased significantly. For many companies, profit is more important than the interests of employees. According to sociologist Isabelle Ferreras, things must and can be more democratic. What if we let employees have a say in the direction of a company? How do you do that? And what are the benefits? Also featuring philosopher Caleb Althorpe, who researches equality and justice in the workplace and the economy.
Isabelle Ferreras is a Research Director at the Belgian National Science Foundation and Professor of Sociology at the UCLouvain. In 2017 Isabelle was elected as a member of the Royal Academy of Sciences, Humanities, and the Arts of Belgium. She is also a Senior Research Associate of the Labor and Worklife Program at Harvard Law School and a Distinguished Research Fellow at the Institute for Ethics in AI at University of Oxford. Her books include Firms as Political Entities: Saving Democracy through Economic Bicameralism (Cambridge University Press) and Democratizing the Corporation: The Bicameral Firm and Beyond (co-edited, Verso).
