Panel Abstract (SAGP 2014): “Neoplatonism, Eschatology, and the Afterlife”

Deepa Majumdar, Purdue University North Central

In this panel we invite papers that address the question of the afterlife as conceived by Neoplatonic philosophers. We welcome other related topics as well. These might include the meaning of embodiment, death, cosmic justice, the role of eschatology, the options for the afterlife and the moral purpose determining these futures, the doctrine of reincarnation, and the relationship of the afterlife to the salvific goal of return to the First Principle. We also welcome papers on the nature of the respites (temporal and otherwise) from reincarnation, through death, forelife, afterlife, and mystical ascent. Finally, we also welcome papers that explore the broad relationship between time, becoming, reincarnation, and finitude.
