The Cardiff University Philosophy Department will hold a conference on “Speech and Society: Contemporary Philosophy of Language” taking place 24th – 25th of June.

In recent years, there has been an increasing ‘social turn’ within the philosophy of language. The aim of this conference is to bring together emerging philosophical work in the social, political, aesthetic and ethical dimensions of language. The format of the conference will be parallel sessions and two keynote sessions over the course of two days.

Topics include, but are not limited to:

•artworks and monuments as forms of speech;

•distinctive features of speech in online spaces;

•potentials and pitfalls of large language models;

•indigenous and minoritized languages: loss and revitalization;

•meanings of pauses and silences

•silencing, epistemic injustices and oppression

•varieties of lying, misleading, and bullshit; dimensions of gendered language;

•oppressive speech and counterspeech

•functioning of dogwhistles, figleaves, and slurs.

Keynote Speakers:

•Professor Emma Borg, Institute of Philosophy, School of Advanced Studies, University of London

•Professor Jennifer Saul, University of Waterloo / University of St Andrews

We invite the submission of abstracts of up to 300 words, suitable for a 20-30 minute presentation, to be submitted via form here: https://forms.gle/5VLszXeDpM4tjyiN8

We especially welcome submissions from minortized and underrepresented groups in philosophy.

There will be a conference fee of £20-40, subject to whether participants have access to institutional funds. The deadline for submission is April 2nd. We expect to communicate decisions by the end of April.
