Call for Papers: Eduardo Mendieta and his philosophical legacy

Special Issue in the Inter-American Journal of Philosophy, Fall 2026 (Vol. 17, Issue 2)

Eduardo Mendieta (1963-2025) was one of the most original and fecund Latin American philosophers of the last three decades. In addition to being a passionate teacher and a devoted mentor for his students throughout his career, his numerous writings reveal a deep commitment to outstanding scholarship across a wide range of areas including ethics, political philosophy, Latin American philosophy, Latinx philosophy and philosophy of race as well as a rare openness to engage in a pluralistic spirit with multiple philosophical traditions. As one of the pioneers of Latin American and Latinx philosophy in the US, Eduardo paved the way for many younger scholars working in these areas to launch successful careers. His death was a great loss to the profession. 

To honor the memory of Eduardo and to preserve and further his intellectual legacy, the Inter-American Journal of Philosophy invites submission of papers for a special issue devoted to Eduardo and his work. In particular, this special issue aims to showcase not only Eduardo's insightful contributions to ethics, political philosophy, Latin American philosophy, Latinx Philosophy and philosophy of race, but also how these contributions are the result of Eduardo's vibrant and continuous engagement with critical theory (Jürgen Habermas and Karl-Otto Apel), decolonial philosophy (Enrique Dussel and Walter Mignolo) and American pragmatism (Richard Rorty and Richard Bernstein) as well as a deep interest in non-human animals, which is the focus of his last book.

Deadline for submissions: August 30th, 2026

Submissions for this special issue should follow the following guidelines:

Manuscripts should be formatted for blind review, with no self-identifying references.

The editor for the special will give preference to manuscripts that are no longer than 30 pages or 7500 words.

INTER-AMERICAN PHILOSOPHICAL REVIEW STYLE SHEET

Articles should be submitted in Microsoft Word document Format. They should be double-spaced throughout (both text and endnotes), in 12 point Times Roman, ragged right.

Use U.S. style punctuation (double quotation marks; period or comma inside close quotation marks).

The terms “Pragmatism” and “Pragmatist” are capitalized when referring to the philosophy.

Avoid use of boldface or underlining. Formatting should be limited to what is minimally necessary.

There should only be a single space after the period.

Dates, Numerals

Use U.S. style for dates–month day, year (such as April 10, 2010).

Page number ranges should use Chicago Manual of Style's rules for inclusive numbers: 231-36 rather than 231-236 or 231-6.

Numerals from 1-100 should be spelled out.
