The departments of Music and Philosophy, University of Sheffield, warmly
invite you to participate in this one day RMA Music Philosophy Study Group
workshop, to discuss philosophical questions raised by human+computer music.
On the musical side, fundamental issues raised by the production and
reception of this music are often obscured in the literature by a focus on
technical details of system construction or function. Meanwhile,
philosophical work on music is typically focused on acoustic
instrumental/vocal works, and arguably it has yet fully to engage with the
challenges raised by current movements in human+computer music, especially
where it does not conform to an established work-concept and/or pitch-based
structures..
The day will start with two keynote speakers:
Prof. Andy Hamilton, Philosophy, University of Durham
Prof. Peter Nelson, Music, University of Edinburgh
The afternoon will consist of two discussion sessions. These will feature
live performances which will provide tangible examples for debate, where the
exact nature of the music can be interrogated, also its potential
changeability observed/questioned.
There will be a poster session over lunch and informal performances in the
evening at a local pub. Further details can be found here:

This is no charge for this event, thanks to generous funding from the
University of Sheffield.
We invite you to register by 30 June 2014, using this link: http://goo.gl/wjAEGU
If you would like to have a poster considered (optional), please submit an
abstract when you register by 23 June 2014 (notification by 25 June).
Additionally, we invite proposals for performances to take place during the
discussion session. These should be of mixed human-computer music that has
the potential to provoke philosophical discussion. Those performers invited
will be offered a contribution towards travel expenses (up to £50). To be
considered for this, please email Mark Summers ([email protected])
by 23 June 2014, including a short description of your proposed performance,
a link to video/sound examples and potential discussion points.
