Bridging the Divide: Frontiers of Analytic and Continental Philosophy

This conference will provide an opportunity for Undergraduates to come and give a presentation of aspects of their work that they feel touch the sides of both Continental and Analytic philosophy. The ‘problem-oriented’ style of Analytic philosophy has encouraged a renewed engagement with Continental approaches to certain philosophical issues. Alongside this, recent trends in continental philosophy takes very seriously science, mathematics, and naturalism, creating space for dialogue with analytic philosophy of science and metaphysics. The two ‘traditions’ have common historical ancestors and touch on many of the same problems, creating a fruitful space to explore attitudes to interpretation of the history of philosophy, as well as contemporary debates.

We welcome interdisciplinary contributions, and abstracts that are as much of a ‘stretch’ to the theme as possible - Take it as a guide, rather than a rule. Please feel welcome to present just on an ‘analytic’ topic or a ‘continental’ one. Similarly, feel free to stretch the definition of analytic or continental - If you’re passionate about something, we want to hear about it!

We want the occasion to be relaxed and enjoyable, so presentations should be between 15 and 45 minutes, with 10 minutes for discussion.

Submission deadline: April 3rd, midnight.

Interested participants can send their abstracts to [email protected]

Warm regards,

Bristol Philosophy Society committee
