The origin and meaning of moral conscience has not been understood. The terminology began in the 5th century BCE, and was modified 600 years later by Christianity. Conscience is not infallible, but its reliability depends on human effort, not on God. Freedom of conscience is avoided in the US constitution, but not in the Indian constitution: Why?
