Details

We invite submissions of abstracts for a one-day symposium exploring the nature and consequences of deep disagreement for argumentation theory. When interlocutors lack shared premises, standards of evidence, or even criteria for what counts as a good argument, what — if anything — can argumentation still accomplish?

Keynote Speaker: Scott F. Aikin (Vanderbilt University) — "Deep Disagreement and the Owl of Minerva Problem"

Topics of interest include:

- The nature and scope of deep disagreement

- Epistemic and argumentative responses to fundamental disagreement

- The limits of rational persuasion

- Deep disagreement in political, moral, and religious contexts

- The role of argumentation in polarized discourse

- Argumentation and epistemic agency under conditions of disagreement

Submission Guidelines: Please submit an abstract of 300–500 words to [email protected] by June 30, 2026. Include your name, affiliation, and contact details in the body of the email.

Notification of acceptance: August 1, 2026.

There is no registration fee.

Organizer: Tomáš Kollárik (Institute of Philosophy, Slovak Academy of Sciences)
