Details

Abstracts of 250-300 words are invited for a workshop on Love’s Passion, to be held at the University of Hertfordshire on 15th-16th September 2014. Although abstracts on any aspect of the philosophy of love will be considered, priority will be given to abstracts which draw attention to the felt, experienced and/or passionate aspects of love. Contributions may come from continental or analytic traditions (with the customary apologies for using this distinction) and may set out religious or secular perspectives.

Some suggested topic areas are given below:

·         What is it that the loving agent wants?

·         How do we connect agapaic love and erotic love?

·         Are desires partly constitutive of love or merely its regular accompaniments?

·         Why love is or is not an emotion.

·         Is love an intrinsically deep emotion?

·         What is the connection between love and religious experience?

·         How do we link love and emotions such as grief?

·         Papers on key (historic and contemporary) contributions to the philosophy of love (e.g. Sappho and Plato; Kolodny, Iris Murdoch and Jean-Luc Marion) are also welcome.

Invited participants: Kamila Pacovská (University of Pardubice); Niklas Forsberg (Uppsala); Kate Larson (Södertörn University College, Stockholm); and Elizabeth Drummond Young (University of Edinburgh). As well as full papers (35-40 minutes presentation time) a number of slots will be reserved for shorter postgraduate papers (20-30 minutes). Please indicate if an abstract is to be considered for the latter.

Abstracts to Tony Milligan [email protected] by 15th July.
