This paper looks at two bronze vessels with decorative texts that were discovered at Mancheng, Hebei. Drawing on Zhuangzi’s dream paradox, I will argue that the multi-layer transformative qualities embodied in the bird-scripts of the hu vessel suggest a ceaseless pursuit for longevity and immortality in the Han dynasty.
