Affective Atmospheres and Interpersonal Encounters

INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP  "AFFECTIVE ATMOSPHERES AND INTERPERSONAL ENCOUNTERS"

Affective atmospheres are increasingly studied across disciplines. They are affective qualities that pervade spaces and are experienced as part of the environment rather than solely within individuals. Atmospheres both shape and are shared by social interactions, influence behavior, expectations, and meaning in shared situations (e.g., tense meetings, festive gatherings, therapeutic settings). While much debate has focused on defining their nature, this workshop focuses on their interpersonal dimension:  

• How do atmospheres emerge, how are they experienced and shared?
• In what ways do they shape and are shaped by interpersonal dynamics in everyday and pre-established contexts?
• How can we study atmospheres methodologically, whether through theory, qualitative-phenomenological methods, or quantitative measures? 

 We will gather scholars from diverse disciplines (philosophy, psychology, architecture, and health sciences) to address these questions. If you’d like to join, please make sure to register by 24th of May (max. 40 participants). Everyone is welcome!
