The Center for American Civic Leadership and Public Discourse at the University of South Carolina solicits submissions for a Junior Faculty Workshop on Unalienable Rights on May 21-22, 2027.

Our founders rightly recognized that justice requires acknowledgement and respect for those rights that pertain to us simply in virtue of our shared human nature. Yet the nature, scope, grounding, and even existence of such rights remains controverted. Six pre-tenure scholars across a range of disciplines will be selected to be matched with a senior mentor in their field, to give a brief presentation of their draft work (to be read ahead by all participants) followed by substantive discussion, critique, and advice. Mentors will subsequently work with authors to find suitable publication destinations for their work.

Details:

The workshop is open to pre-tenure faculty in a range of disciplines, including law, political theory, history, religion, and others. Each of the six chosen scholars will receive an honorarium of $1000, and all travel and lodging expenses, to attend the workshop.

Application:

We invite submissions on any question or topic concerning unalienable human rights of no more than 10K words for consideration. Submissions should be uploaded below.

Deadline and Decision Timeframe:

Applications must be submitted by January 4, 2027, for consideration. Decisions on which scholars are chosen will be announced in late January 2027.
