Synthese Topical Collection: Contemporary debates, Rylean Ideas
Guest Editor: Brice Bantegnie (Archives Henri-Poincaré)
Topical Collection Description: In recent years, an increasing number of young researchers have found renewed inspiration in the work of Gilbert Ryle, producing contributions in the philosophy of mind, the philosophy of action and epistemology, among other areas. The goal of this topical collection is to highlight the work of authors who have made such contribution and to encourage further Rylean contributions to contemporary debates, on the conviction that a Rylean perspective can help reinvigorate them.
Appropriate topics for submission include:
— the nature of mental states and mental constructs — the nature of action, voluntariness, and practical knowledge — the nature of knowledge in general, of moral knowledge and self-knowledge
— metaphysics
— any topic for which Rylean ideas may provide new insights Given that Ryle’s work has often been discussed from a methodological and/or a metaphilosophical perspective, submissions focused on philosophical methodology or metaphilosophy are appropriate insofar as they contribute to advancing debates within the areas listed above.
The deadline for submission is November 10, 2026.
