The Emergence of Psychology as a Human Science of Experience. A Phenomenological Proposal

Date and time: Thursday 27 August 2026, 18:00–19:30 UK/Ireland time

Mainstream contemporary psychology usually addresses human experience in an extremely reductionist way. That is, it reduces the latter to simple and isolated parts, be it neurons, neurotransmitters or visible behaviours and quantifiable reactions. And yet, human experience is an incredibly complex and multifaceted subject-matter that can’t be reduced to its supposed biological correlates or to quantifiable variables. Rather, it emerges as a complex, meaningful whole in constant evolution. In this talk, I suggest that psychology needs a radical inquiry into its nature and its methods if it wants to be a rightful science in its own right. If we don’t develop a solid epistemological foundation of psychology, the latter is likely to not really grasp its subject-matter according to its nature and risks to fail as a science. Finally, I will claim that psychology could greatly benefit on a foundational level from Husserl’s late thought: genetic phenomenology.
