2027 Uehiro Philosophy Graduate Student Conference: The Self & The Other

The Philosophy Department at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa invites Graduate Students in Philosophy to submit to the 2027 Uehiro Graduate Student Conference. This year's conference explores how the ways in which we conceptualize and situate ourselves and others within our shared institutions fundamentally shape our understanding and recognition of identity, community, and justice. Bringing together perspectives from phenomenology, philosophy of mind, feminist philosophy, social philosophy, critical theory, comparative philosophy, and the cognitive sciences, this conference explores the dynamic relationships between perceiving and being, private life and public life, self and other.

We invite papers that explore how embodied, social, and cultural modes of perceiving shape, and are themselves shaped by, different modes of being, relating, and acting in the world.

As one of the first comparative Philosophy Departments and the host of the East-West Philosophers' Conference since 1939, we also welcome submissions from those interested in cross-cultural, transnational, and fusion philosophies. 

Topics may include but are not limited to:

• Community, love, friendship 

• Comparative philosophies

• Embodiment, bodily subjectivity, and social comportments

• Enactivism, ecological psychology

• Epistemology and epistemic (in)justice

• Ethical and political dimensions of joint flourishing, civic virtue

• Indigenous philosophical perspectives

• Intersubjectivity and intercorporeality

• Race, gender, sexuality, bodily and cognitive divergence

• Recognition and empathy

• Selfhood, consciousness, and subjectivity

• Shared aesthetics, atmospheres, and joint attention
  
  

Submission Guidelines:

We strongly encourage the submission of full papers or working drafts to enable effective review of no more than 5000 words. If authors prefer to submit an abstract, it should be 500–750 words (not including references and bibliography). Whether submitting a full paper, a draft, or an abstract, all materials must be anonymized for blind review and submitted as PDF files. Authors whose full papers are accepted will receive priority for travel support. All submissions must be named “UH2027_SURNAME_TITLE OF YOUR PAPER_FULL/ABSTRACT”.

The deadline for submission is December 15th, 2026 at 11:59PM HST.

Presentations should not exceed 20 minutes in length, and students will be allotted another 10 minutes for questions.

Notifications of acceptance will be sent by December 30th, 2026.

For all accepted presenters, lodging for the full duration of the conference (three nights) will be provided, along with partial travel subsidies.

International students who are accepted may present via Zoom, if they wish.
