Jeremy Butterfield’s The Multiverse is an introduction to the idea that our universe is just one of many universes. He presents and assesses three versions of the idea of the multiverse: one from philosophy and two from physics. He explores: the ideas of logically possible worlds, the branches of the quantum state (in the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics), and the bubbles of inflationary cosmology. For each idea, he selects one philosophical question to explore in depth. They are, respectively: what is a possible world, what is chance, and what is explanation?

On Sep 16 2026, 18.00 CEST, we'll host a virtual book launch in which Jeremy Butterfield will present his book in conversation with Al Wilson (Leeds) and Richard Dawid (Stockholm). The event will be chaired by Helen Beebee (Leeds) and David Teira (Madrid), from BSPS Open, the diamond open access collection publishing the book in partnership with Calgary UP.
