Special issue: “The Vindication of Epistemic Norms”

We invite submissions for a special issue of Crítica on “The Vindication of Epistemic Norms”. The issue will feature invited papers by Timothy Williamson (Oxford), Maria Lasonen-Aarnio (Helsinki), Matthew McGrath (WashU, St. Louis), Kate Nolfi (Vermont), and Brian Talbot (Colorado, Boulder). 

Possible topics include, but are not limited to:

• The relationship between constitutive norms and epistemic norms;

• Consequentialist approaches to the vindication of epistemic norms;

• Deontological approaches to the vindication of epistemic norms;

• Epistemic trade-offs as a challenge to the vindication of epistemic norms;

• The conditions under which it is epistemically permissible to violate epistemic norms;

• Objectivist and perspectival epistemic norms;

• The “wrong kind of reasons” problem and the vindication of epistemic norms;

• The evaluation of doxastic dispositions versus the evaluation of doxastic states;

• The relationship between epistemic norms and practical or moral norms;

• The social dimension of epistemic norms

• Epistemic norms governing inquiry, deliberation, and belief revision;

• Higher-order evidence and its implications for epistemic normativity;

• The relationship between epistemic norms and epistemic virtues.

Papers should not exceed 10,000 words excluding references and should be submitted in PDF or Word format to Miguel Ángel Fernández to the following email address: [email protected]. Acceptable languages are English and Spanish. The deadline for submissions is February 1, 2027. 

Authors must send two electronic versions of their manuscripts. One should include the author’s name, title of contribution, e-mail address, postal address (including phone number); and a second version should be prepared for anonymous refereeing, where all references to the author including acknowledgments and biographical details are omitted. The file containing the article text must include the title, an abstract (200 words maximum) and a list of five keywords not mentioned in the title. Title, abstract, and keywords should be both in English and Spanish.
