The Examined Algorithm: Strategies for Navigating AI in the Classroom | APA Live

Have you been thinking about how to deal with AI in your philosophy classes this fall? In an effort to support philosophers as they respond to emergent problems, the APA and the AAPT have organized a free, two-afternoon, interactive Zoom forum for philosophy teachers to share and develop strategies for addressing student AI usage. Participants will meet virtually in groups to discuss AI in introductory and general education philosophy courses, AI in student writing, AI in online philosophy courses, and AI in formal logic. Because these AI discussions will be philosophy-specific, we believe they will be particularly productive.

Each of the four 90-minute sessions will have a moderator, who will give a brief presentation before opening the floor, and a scribe, who will take notes for later distribution to participants who are registered for any of the four sessions. The format will aspire to the AAPT-style, active-learning sessions of The Teaching Hub. The sessions will be discussions, not lectures. The focus will be on crowdsourcing the successful ways in which philosophers have responded to AI in their courses.

A few notes:

1. Participants will be expected to keep their cameras on, unless ADA accommodations are needed. We will all happily weather occasional interruptions from kids, aging parents, and non-human companions.

2. These sessions will not be recorded—participants must attend live at the times listed. 

3. If you are interested in being a scribe or moderator for one of the sessions (which still allows you to fully participate) please contact us as soon as you are able.
