Workshop: Artificial Intelligence in Light of Classical Philosophy

Artificial Intelligence is transforming human society, raising pressing philosophical questions across ethics, epistemology, and ontology: from the limits of its application and the economic, political, and ecological conditions it requires, to its ethical, geopolitical, and existential consequences. Even AI's own ontological status, whether it is rather object or subject, raises fascinating questions about "intelligence," "artificiality," and "agency."

This project explores these questions through the lens of classical philosophical traditions, including Aristotle, Aquinas, Suárez, Hegel, Brentano, and others, which offer fresh ways of understanding not only AI, but our own nature as human beings.

Realized as a series of workshops, the project opened with a meeting in Prague on September 25–27, 2025. This second workshop takes place in Bamberg, with a further meeting planned for 2027, and results to be published in a peer-reviewed volume. The initiative brings together scholars and professionals across disciplines to deepen understanding of AI's role in our world, while continuing the University of Bamberg–Budweis (České Budějovice) collaboration ongoing since 2017.
