Counterreading the Canon: Indigenous Philosophical Approaches to Foundational Texts

We invite proposals for chapters in this edited volume. The volume brings Indigenous philosophical frameworks to bear on canonical texts in the Western philosophical tradition. It explores what becomes visible when familiar texts are read through Indigenous relational ontologies, land-based epistemologies, and ethical and political frameworks.

We seek sustained counterreadings of major figures and texts across ancient, modern, and contemporary philosophy. Contributions should use Indigenous philosophical resources to expose assumptions that conventional interpretations leave largely unquestioned and/or open new possibilities for understanding canonical works. The aim is to move beyond calls to diversify the canon by demonstrating how Indigenous philosophy can transform the practices through which canonical texts are interpreted, evaluated, and taught.

We welcome engagements with any period of the Western philosophical tradition and with a wide range of Indigenous philosophical traditions and intellectual resources.
