Sense-making in the digital age: Context and time collapse in the algorithmic feed

Abstract: Context collapse, the flattening of multiple audiences into a singular context, and time collapse, the muddling of temporalities on social media, have been the site of much attention in social media literature regarding personal identity and presentation, and increasingly, epistemology and post-truth discourse. Despite this, relatively little attention has been paid to how the algorithmic feed affects these relations, or how their consequences alter everyday lived experience beyond the platform. This paper addresses this gap by interrogating how algorithmically fed spatio-temporal collapses impact broader user sense-making practices. Ultimately, I argue that these dynamics affect more than how users present and relate to themselves—they actively reshape how users navigate the world around them, fundamentally altering notions of agency, being, and practice.
Bio: Lauren Pedersen-Hor is a PhD candidate at Deakin University. Her doctoral research investigates how human-network feedback loops constrain and make possible different subjectivities, focusing particularly on the symbiotic, often unconscious relationships between the user, platform, and algorithm. Her broader research interests span the philosophy of technology, field philosophy, and media and communications theory. In addition to her doctoral research, Lauren is a Research Assistant for the Deakin Philosophy and Religious Studies research group and runs the Deakin Minorities in Philosophy reading group.
