Dear colleagues,

We are pleased to announce the workshop “The Shapes of Scientific Understanding,” to be held on Monday, November 9, 2026, from 14:00 to 18:30 at the Center for Philosophy of Science, University of Pittsburgh.

The workshop will bring together philosophers working on the nature, structure, and varieties of scientific understanding.

Speakers:

  • David Barack (Carnegie Mellon University): Scientific Understanding and Evidence;
  • Alfredo Vernazzani (TU Dortmund / University of Pittsburgh): Scientifically Unintelligible Phenomena;
  • Daniel Wilkenfeld (University of Pittsburgh): On the Unity between Quantitative and Qualitative Understanding.

Discussant: 

  • Kareem Khalifa (UCLA)
