Call for Papers
Foundations is the student-led undergraduate philosophy journal at the University of Pennsylvania dedicated to showcasing thoughtful philosophical work by undergraduate students. Revived in 2026, the journal provides a venue for students to engage seriously with philosophical questions and contribute their work to a broader intellectual community.
We welcome submissions across philosophical traditions and areas of inquiry, including, but not limited to: political philosophy, philosophy of mind, epistemology, metaphysics, philosophy of science, aesthetics, ethics, and the history of philosophy. We encourage submissions that demonstrate careful reasoning, clear argumentation, and rich engagement with philosophical ideas.
Foundations is now accepting submissions for the 2027 issue.
We are soliciting undergraduate papers on a philosophical topic of your choice. Papers should be in the range of 2,500 - 5,000 words. Essays must be unpublished, not in submission elsewhere, and not the work of AI. Authors must be undergraduates at the time of submission.
All submissions must be formatted for blind review. This means that all identifying information should be removed from the paper.
All submissions must include the following statement from the author on the cover page: "No artificial intelligence was used in the research, writing, or editing of the submitted manuscript." The excellence of the undergraduate philosophy essay must come from the relationship between student and paper only. Foundations reserves the right to investigate and reject papers on the basis of AI usage.
