Much work has been done on the “canon” of Scottish philosophy, the emblematic texts like Smith’s Wealth of Nations or Hume’s Treatise of Human Nature, but the world of letters in 17th-, 18th-, and 19th-century Scotland included a vibrant mix of literary forms including pamphlets, poems, plays, novels, satires, sermons, and magazine articles, as well as translations into and out of English, and appropriations and reinterpretations of canonical literature. Papers on all topics related to Scottish philosophy are welcome, but we especially invite papers relating to Scottish philosophy beyond the confines of the typical canon. The conference will also feature talks connected to the in-progress edited collection Reason and Revelation: Scottish Philosophy and Christian Theology, with invited speakers: Bradford Bow (Aberdeen), Deborah Boyle (College of Charleston), Giovanni Gellera (Geneva), Eugene Heath (SUNY - New Paltz), and Tim Stuart-Buttle (York). Submit abstracts of 300-500 words as anonymized email attachment to: [email protected]. Emails should contain author name(s), contact and affiliation, and must be received by Feb. 1, 2027. Authors will be notified by Feb. 28, 2027. If accepted, papers should be prepared for a 30-minute presentation.
