Workshop description:

The workshop focuses on Ruth Faden's and Madison Powers' 2006 book, entitled ‘Social Justice: 'Social Justice. The Moral Foundations of Public Health and Health Policy' (OUP 2006). The meeting will be dedicated to presentations of papers by young and advanced researchers, in-depth discussion sessions with Prof. Faden and Prof. Powers, as well as a public lecture on the topic of Children and Social Justice, by the authors. The workshop aims to provide an informal platform for an interdisciplinary exchange on social justice in bioethics, with a focus on Powers and Faden’s social justice theory.

We welcome contributions from young and advanced scholars working on the topic of social justice and bioethics. The following areas are of special interest to the workshop:

  • Discussion or critique of specific aspects of Powers and Faden’s social justice theory
  • Discussion or critique on the relevance of social justice theory for bioethics (with reference to Powers and Faden)
  • Application of the authors’ theory (and other theories of social justice) to your current work in the field of bioethics

Please submit an abstract (500 words) to [email protected], by March 1, 2012.

Please note that all selected presenters will be asked to send in their draft papers (3500-5000 words) by May 15, 2012. It is planned to publish part of the papers in a special section of an international, peer reviewed journal. You are also welcome to participate at the workshop without having submitted a paper. Registration for the workshop is free but required, as places are limited.

For further information, registration and submission of abstracts, please email Agomoni Ganguli Mitra ([email protected]).
