Symposium: Ethical Values and Emotions

Olomouc, Czech Republic

The Symposium on the Ethical Values and Emotions is organised as a second meeting of the Central and Eastern European Ethics Network. This network aims at fostering cooperation and interchange between ethicists conducting their research in European countries of the former “Eastern” block. The underlying ambition of the network is to create a sharing platform for discussing problems connected with rebuilding research in the humanities – research that has been deeply affected by the totalitarian past.

The second meeting of the CEEEN will focus on the role of emotions in moral life. The problem of whether some emotions have a place in a good and moral life forms an important controversy between Plato and Aristotle that culminated in Hellenistic schools. It has been discussed and reassessed ever since by almost all key ethical thinkers, including Hume and Kant, and has become one of the main foci of ethical research in the last four decades in both Anglophone and Continental domains. We welcome proposals from different traditions and periods, so far as they attempt to provide a significant insight into the problem described.

Possible topics include but are not limited to the following:

The different roles of emotions, feelings and desires in moral life and moral action

Emotions as motives of moral (and immoral) action

Moral assessment of emotions, and the question of responsibility

Emotions of moral assessment: remorse, guilt feelings, shame, resentment

Praiseworthy emotions: love, compassion and sympathy, respect, joy

Bad emotions: spite, jealousy, envy, wrath

Emotions as responses to values and/or value judgments

The role of emotions in a good life

Virtues, vices and the cultivation of emotions

Art as an education of emotions, as in Aristotle´s notion of katharsis

Emotions as a source of irrationality and of a morally wrong action: self-deception, akrasia

To submit a proposal, please send an abstract of maximum 300 words to [email protected] by 31stJanuary, 2015 (along with your name, academic affiliation and contact information). Notifications of acceptance will be given by 28th February. In addition to full papers (45 minutes including discussion), a number of slots will be reserved for shorter postgraduate papers (20-30 minutes
