Naming Matters – Workshop on the Logic of Proper Names

Naming Matters is a workshop with the world’s leading researchers on proper names, the Stuttgart Circle for logic, and the Student Representatives of Philosophy of the University of Stuttgart on Friday 19th and Saturday 20th of December in 2014.

    Place: University of Stuttgart
Speakers: Hans Kamp, Artemis Alexiadou, Tillmann Pross,
Tomoo Ueda, Hazel Pearson, Jonathan Mai.
    Language: English/ German

In this workshop we will explore the following topics: (1) A communication-theoretic approach to the semantics and pragmatics of proper names (Hans Kamp). (2) The syntax of proper names with articles and their significance for theories of determiners as well as for theories of the status of proper names (Artemis Alexiadou). (3) New questions concerning the representative range of logical form formalisms regarding Fodor’s puzzle and the metasemantics of attitude reports (Tillmann Pross). (4) The relationship between naming conventions and linguistic competence (Tomoo Ueda). (5) Topic will be available soon (Hazel Pearson). (6) The strange consequences of the idea that the name’s contribution to the truth-conditions of modal contexts is simply its extension in the actual world (Jonathan Mai).

We invite anyone (including junior students and professors) to take advantage of this unique gathering to exchange views with experts on proper names. We are looking forward to seeing you at Naming Matters to discuss your questions in a relaxed and festive atmosphere in the heart of Stuttgart. Participation is free of charge and registration is open to anyone. Visit to register (Deadline 17th of December) and to get further information.
