Details

The Centre for Logic and Philosophy of Science (CLWF) of the Free University Brussels (VUB) organizes a workshop on philosophy of mathematics. The workshop will be held at the Royal Flemisch Academy of Belgium for Science and the Arts.

The objective of the workshop will be to understand and evaluate the idea that mathematicians do not merely pile up proofs of theorems, but have other aims as well. Philosophy of mathematics can reflect on what this "extra" could be. A non-exhaustive list of topics that try to descrive such aims is:

  • Mathematical explanation
  • Mathematical understanding
  • Mathematical creativity
  • Mathematical discovery
  • Mathematical beauty
  • Mathematical experimentation
  • ...

The keynote speakers are:

  • Jeremy Avigad (Carnegie Mellon University)
  • Alan Baker (Swarthmore College)
  • Ronny Desmet (Free University Brussels)
  • Jean Paul Van Bendegem (Free University Brussels)

We welcome paper proposals within the conference theme. A title and abstract (300-500 words) should be submitted on Easychair (https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=pmw2015), before September 20.
