Justifying Power and Decisions in the 21st Century: Rethinking Legitimacy from a PPE perspective
Witten/Herdecke University, 6th – 8th May 2016
How can political science, economics and philosophy contribute to shedding light on the current discussions around legitimacy in the 21st century? What are the latest research topics and hotly debated issues – and what is currently missing on the agenda?
The challenges facing modern society do not respect academic or national boundaries. In the highly complex and mutually interdependent societies of the 21st century, the most convincing and lasting impetus comes from individuals who think in interdisciplinary terms and know how to integrate economic, political and philosophical perspectives. Thus, the topic of “legitimacy” lends itself particularly well to our debate as it brings together a plethora of the yet-to-be-answered questions about what it actually means for a society to operate a morally legitimate, politically stable and economically viable social arrangement.
The aim of the conference is to give advanced undergraduate, graduate and PhD students working in the field of PPE an opportunity to present and discuss their projects with peers, receive feedback for work in progress, and build a wider community of interdisciplinary students across Germany, Europe and beyond.
The conference will consist of three keynote speeches and a series of paper sessions, organised by the scientific committee.
Keynote speakers:
Dr. Fiona Adamson, University of London
Dr. Karen Horn, Humboldt University Berlin
Dr. Robert Lepenies, Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin/ FU Berlin
Prof. Dr. Fabienne Peter, University of Warwick
