Omnipresence and Indwelling

Professor Eleonore Stump, Saint Louis University

Date: Thursday 26th January 2017; Time: 15:30 - 17:30

Venue: BS/007 (Berrick Saul Building, Campus West), University of York, UK

The Department of Philosophy at the University of York  is pleased to announce the third in a series of seminars on the Beatific Vision, sponsored by the Analytic Theology Project at the University of Innsbruck.

'For things made of matter, being present is a matter of being here now. Analogously, for immaterial God, presence involves relations to both space and time. The relations involved in presence with regard to space and time are typically characterized as presence in or presence at. In addition, however, there is also the kind of presence that one person can have to another. Typically, this kind of presence is characterized as presence with or presence to another person. Since there is mind and will in God, God can have something like presence to or with human persons as well. Finally, there is a certain special kind of empathic presence possible for persons who love one another. In the case of God, this presence is traditionally referred to as ‘indwelling’. In this paper, I will investigate God’s presence in all these respects.'

Biography: Eleonore Stump is the Robert J. Henle Professor of Philosophy at Saint Louis University, where she has taught since 1992.
