Details

The project of conceiving of philosophy as encyclopaedic knowledge is deeply rooted in Hegel’s thought, and appeared in a concrete and definite form for the first time in the Encyclopaedia of the Philosophical Sciences published in Heidelberg in 1817. Two hundred years after the publication of the Heidelberg Encyclopaedia, that project continues to be one of the least understood aspects of Hegel´s philosophy; it seems to be today, if not a completely obsolete, at least one of its most uninspiring features, something that belongs rather to what is “dead” in Hegel´s thought than to what is “alive” in it.

The Second German-Latin American Hegel Conference aims to discuss Hegel´s project of a philosophical encyclopaedia by examining its historical background and the systematic character of the encyclopaedic self-understanding of Hegel´s thought. It will thereby investigate the Encyclopaedia of the Philosophical Sciences with respect to the content and the problems tackled by its three successive editions. Moreover, it will analyse the encyclopaedic dimension of the Logic, the Philosophy of Nature, and the Philosophy of Spirit of the Encyclopaedia in general as well as in comparison with Hegel´s position on those same subjects in his other works.

The Second German-Latin American Hegel Conference invites researchers in Latin America and the German speaking world as well as others who might be interested to consider Hegel´s Encyclopaedia under various systematic headings. The Conference will be held under the auspices of FILORED – the German-Latin American Research and Doctoral Network in Philosophy – a cooperative network of the Fernuniversität in Hagen (Hagen), the Ruhr-Universität Bochum (Bochum), the Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg (Halle), the Pontificia Universidad Católica Argentina (Buenos Aires), the Universidad Federal do Ceará (Fortaleza), the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul (Porto Alegre), the Universidad Nacional de Colombia (Bogotá), the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso (Valparaíso), the Universidad Diego Portales (Santiago de Chile) and the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (Lima).
