Details

The period for submissions of abstracts for the International Conference "Philosophy for Children", organized by the Episteme & Logos Association, to be held at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Porto on July 7, 2017, is officialy open. The main topics to be discussed at the conference will be several aspects of this multidisciplinary area. Undergraduate, Master's and PhD students, researchers and faculty members must submit their proposals anonymously.

Official languages: Portuguese, Spanish and English.


Keynote speakers:

Professor Eugénio Oliveira (Associação Portuguesa de Ética e Filosofia Prática)
          - Degree in Philosophy - Educational Branch - at the Faculty of Philosophy of Braga (Portuguese Catholic University) in 1991. High School teacher. He is an ethical and philosophical consultant. Formater of educators and teachers of Philosophy for Children and Youth, Ethics and Professional Deontology and Practical Philosophy and Critical Thinking. He is the founder and since 2008 the president of the Portuguese Association of Ethics and Practical Philosophy. He is also the author and co-author of several books ("Today's Themes, Themes of Every Time - Essays on Education, Ethics and Philosophy", "Feeling the Truth of Reason" or "Manual of Philosophy Session Plans for Children and Young People". He is one of the most notable promoters of Pratical Philosophy and Philosophy for Children in Portugal and invited as a guest speaker in numerous academic and civil events. He also organized various activities/workshops for schools, teachers and students.



Professor Emeritus Thomas E. Wartenberg: 
          - Bachelor in Philosophy from Amherst College, Master's degree from Stanford University, Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh and Professor Emeritus of Philosophy at Mount Holyoke College (USA). He works on the intersection between Philosophy and Popular Culture. He teaches Philosophy to primary school students, a project that has gained worldwide recognition (see https://www.teachingchildrenphilosophy.org/). He received several honors (Fullbright Research Fellow, National Endowment for the Humanities Fellow and was an Honorary Visiting Professor at the University of Auckland). He received a grant to develop the teaching of Philosophy to young children from the Squire Family Foundation, creating an innovative course of philosophy teaching to primary school children. He is the author of an influential book in the area: "Big Ideas for Little Kids: Teaching Philosophy Through Children's Literature", plus several chapters and articles. Other areas of interest are the Philosophy of Film, Aesthetics, Existentialism or German Philosophy.


Abstract submission:

We invite submissions for 20 minute presentations (followed by 15 minutes of discussion). Topics of interest may include (but are not limited to): 


- The Right to Education throughout History
- Philosophy of Education and Education of Philosophy
- Influences and Promoters of Philosophy for Children (P4C)
- The relevance, the methods and the fundamentals of the P4C
- Critical, creative and ethical dimensions of P4C
- The Research Community: P4C programs
- The Philosophical Question
- Philosophy in Childhood and Childhood in Philosophy
- The autonomy of the child
- Consciousness and Argumentation
- The role of the Facilitator and the teaching materials
- Session versus Lecture
- The P4C and the excercise of citizenship and democracy;
- The instruments of P4C.


The proposal must have an abstract of 250-500 words, should be prepared for blind review and include a cover page with full name, institution, contact information and short bio. Files should be submitted in doc(x) word.
