"Collective Moral Obligations" offers a novel theory of collective moral obligations as an ethical theory of cooperation. The book defends the view that individual agents in transient or unstructured groups can collectively hold obligations, i.e. joint duties to perform an action or to produce an outcome together. This account of jointly held duties is preferable to individualist accounts which construe duties to cooperate as conditional and individual. The theory has important practical implications with regard to facing global challenges, including global poverty and climate change.
Anne Schwenkenbecher is a Lecturer in Philosophy in the School of Arts and Academic Chair of the Philosophy program at Murdoch University in Perth, Australia. Before joining Murdoch in June 2013, she held appointments at the University of Melbourne, the Center for Applied Philosophy and Public Ethics (CAPPE) at Australian National University, the University of Vienna, and Potsdam University. Anne is currently a visiting fellow with the Oxford Martin School at the University of Oxford, UK.
The workshop is organized in "Author Meets Critics" format, where assigned discussants will comment on the book chapters and the author will reply.
