*Funding Available for Graduate Students and Recent PhDs to attend workshop, The Language of Nature: Reconsidering the Mathematization of Science, co-sponsored by the Minnesota Center for Philosophy of Science and the Rotman Institute. The workshop will be held at the University of Western Ontario, October 11–October 14, 2012. *

The Language of Nature: Reconsidering the Mathematization of Science. The aim of this workshop project is to re-evaluate a prominent historiographical orientation of twentieth century research on the Scientific Revolution—the mathematization of nature (Koyré, Dijksterhius, Burtt)—in light of the proliferation of novel methodological orientations and studies in the last generation of scholars. By examining the relation between mathematical and scientific knowledge from a variety of perspectives, including philosophical, social, and rhetorical, the workshop and volume will shed new light on the complex gestation and nurture of modern science. This workshop is sponsored by the Minnesota Center for Philosophy of Science and the Rotman Institute of Philosophy. It will be held at the University of Western Ontario on October 11–14, 2012. The results will be published in /Minnesota Studies in Philosophy of Science./

Faculty participants will write papers that examine the relation between mathematical and scientific knowledge from a variety of perspectives. These papers will be distributed to participants well before the workshop. All participants will be expected to read all papers before the workshop begins. Discussion of individual papers will be initiated by a ten-minute commentary on the paper (by a participant other than the author) and a five-minute response by the author. Graduate student and recent PhD participants will be expected to give at least one and possibly more commentaries.

The workshop is by invitation only. Graduate students and recent PhDs interested in participating should send a CV and a letter explaining their interest, and arrange for a letter of recommendation to be sent directly to the Center at [email protected] . All application materials should be received by *September 4, 2012* for full consideration.

The organizers seek racial, cultural, and gender diversity among project participants and encourage those in under-represented groups to apply.
