Details

Flinders University is holding a symposium in September to celebrate the centenary of Durkheim's landmark text The Elementary Forms of Religious Life.

Widely recognized as a classic in sociology and anthropology, Durkheim's text also directly engages with philosophical themes, for example, the discussion of the categories of time and space as a critique of Kant. More generally, The Elementary Forms of Religious Life has been influential for French currents of philosophical thought (and for French philosophy's close links with anthropology and social theory), with thinkers ranging from Maurice Merleau-Ponty to Vincent Descombes devoting essays to its thematic and traditions.
