Details

The American Association of Philosophy Teachers (AAPT), in collaboration with the APA Committee on the Teaching of Philosophy, seeks presenters for a workshop on innovative methods in philosophical pedagogy, for the upcoming Teaching Hub at the 2018 Eastern Division Meeting, Jan. 3 - Jan. 6, in Savannah, Georgia.

Specifically, we are looking for experienced teachers who are prepared to demonstrate an innovative pedagogical technique or effective content lesson to an audience of professional philosophy teachers, who would then offer feedback to the demonstrator during a post-presentation discussion period. Last year, for example, the Teaching Hub offered a two-hour, interactive workshop on team-based learning in philosophy, which was well received. This year, we would like to offer an equally effective development opportunity, but add more time for feedback and a closing discussion.

Some goals of the workshop include:

  • To showcase one or more particularly innovative approaches to the teaching of philosophy, so that workshop attendees may selectively incorporate new and effective techniques into their own pedagogical practice.

  • To provide an opportunity for dedicated teachers of philosophy to  receive targeted, constructive feedback on specific aspects of their teaching from a knowledgeable and diverse community of philosophy teachers.

  • To encourage all workshop participants to think critically about their teaching practices.

Proposals of no more than 500 words, accompanied by a CV, should be sent to Zach Barnett,[email protected], by September 15, 2017. Please include an explanation of the proposed lesson, highlighting any of its especially innovative and/or interactive aspects. We expect to select presenters by October 1, 2017.

The AAPT/APA Teaching Hub is a set of sessions about teaching philosophy held at various divisional meetings of the APA, emphasizing inclusive and collegial interactions. The Teaching Hub coordinates conversations about the teaching of philosophy at all levels, pre-college through graduate school.
