Details

Recent years have seen a revival of interest in the work of one of Downing’s most famous and distinguished Fellows, the literary teacher and critic F. R. Leavis. The conference follows on from a commemorative dinner held in College in 2011 attended by many of Dr Leavis’ former pupils including Howard Jacobson and Sir Trevor Nunn.

Leavis is now regarded as one of the most important figures in modern British intellectual history. The conference will explore various facets of his work, including the development of his ideas about language, culture and value-judgement. It will mark the 50th anniversary of his Richmond Lecture, Two Cultures? The Significance of C.P.Snow.

For details about the programme please contact the conference organiser, Dr Chris Joyce at [email protected].
