Moral Epistemology

The ACU is pleased to announce a conference on moral epistemology, broadly construed. The dates are Thursday (afternoon) 31 May, 2018 through Saturday, 2 June; the venue is the ACU in Melbourne.  Among the speakers will be Garrett Cullity (Adelaide), C. Stephen Evans (Baylor), Karen Jones (Melbourne), Russ Shafer-Landau (Wisconsin), and Christine Swanton (Auckland).

Possible topics include epistemic justification in ethics; moral perception; the nature and epistemic status of moral intuition(s); arguments for (local or global) moral skepticism; ethical aspects of social epistemology and its relation to justification in ethics; the relation between methodology in ethics and moral epistemology; the analogy or disanalogy between moral knowledge and other forms of knowledge such as mathematical, scientific, or religious knowledge; and the history of moral epistemology.

Submissions may be in the form of abstracts of approximately 1,000 words, and full papers (with a limit of 8,000 words) should be headed by similarly detailed abstracts.  Submissions should be prepared for anonymous review and accompanied by name and address in a separate file. The two files should be sent to [email protected]. The deadline is 15 December, 2017.

The papers presented will have commentators, and the organisers also welcome offers to comment on scheduled papers; these should be accompanied by a CV and also sent to [email protected].

The conference organisers—Robert Audi, David Killoren, Tyler Paytas, and Richard Rowland—will read submissions (likely assisted by other readers) and will contact authors within about a month of submission.  A block of rooms will be reserved for presenters and other participants at a conference rate. Authors will be contacted within about a month of submission. The organisers have limited funds to subsidise the travel and accommodation of some accepted papers, though authors of accepted papers will be expected to use or apply for internal funding sources.
