Details

Neuropsychological conditions including synesthesia and hallucinations have been important in shaping our understanding of perception and cognition. For example, synesthesia has been important in revealing the extent to which modalities interact while hallucinations have been linked to disorders such as schizophrenia. We are inviting contributions for a special issue in Frontiers in Bioscience on “Synesthesia, hallucination and mental disorders.”

The aim of this Research Topic is to generate an open discussion on the contribution of synesthesia, hallucinations, and mental disorders to the study of perception and cognition as well as their relation and boundaries.

We welcome articles which examine the various aspects of perception and cognition as relating to synesthesia, hallucinations, and mental disorders including, but not limited to:

  • The relation between synesthesia or hallucinations and mental disorders such as hyper-associative thinking, hypersensitivity, anxiety, depression, or schizophrenia.

  • The relation between synesthesia, hallucinations, or mental disorders and cognition such as creativity.

  • The relation between problem of hallucination and the problem of empty names.

  • The relation between synesthesia, hallucinations, or mental disorders and multi-modal correspondences.

  • The relation between synesthesia, hallucinations, or mental disorders and memory.

  • The relation between synesthesia, hallucinations, or mental disorders and empathetic perception such as emphatic pain.

  • The relation between drug-induced synesthesia, hallucinations or mental disorders.

  • The relation between synesthesia or mental disorders and the immune system.
