Abstract. The issue of shame has made frequent appearances in philosophical, spiritual, religious, psychoanalytic and literary traditions, but it has also gained wide currency in contemporary thought and discourse. Having been interpreted with existential, psychological and even political significance, I introduce the experience of shame as a moral  emotion in the relation between life and spirit. As a kind of diremptive experience, however, I focus on the self-revelatory quality of shame that throws us back on ourselves critically. I also consider the possibility of a debilitating shame and the problem of shamelessness.
